Salt approached us to do a 25’ façade inspired by the actual house from the Netflix TV show Stranger Things. This is currently featured in the Marriott Marquie Hotel in Time Square. The faced wraps around the entrance of the theater greeting customers as they enter for the new Broadway show called Stranger Things: First Shadow. My focus on this build was all about the framing of the façade. It had to be modular, light, and pass structural and DOB requirements. I decided to build the foundation out of ¾” D3 Ply and then build everything above that out of 1x3” pine stud and MDF, stripping everything down to its lightest possible material. I think one of the most interesting things about this building was the custom molding. Being that we wanted to replicate the original house as close as possible and we were unable to find the molding used on the house we had to develop a lot of our own. I had to design stackable material that would be mitered and routed in a certain order to achieve the proper look. Following this I would say accommodating the LEDs within the molding was a fairly technical ordeal. Overall, this project was really fun and forced me to think about certain materials in a new way which has now changed my perspective.
