Thomas Morton Monument

Project Alpha Main

The Factory was contacted by New Red Order and Boston Public Art Triennial to fabricate a sculpture of Thomas Morton which depicted a culmination of what represents Boston while also weaving in the long-standing history between the native American’s and pilgrims. This if the most complex sculpture I have worked on. Being the lead designer / engineer / and drafter, it was my responsibility to determine how parts of the sculpture would be fabricated. Wheater that was mixed media, milled on the CNC, or 3D printed. It was my job to split the model in areas that made manufacturing more practical given the constraints of the fabrication technology. From there I developed a 3D print / CNC schedule to help keep the rest of the team informed. It was also my responsibility to design the substructure, provide estimated weight calculations, and provide drawings for engineering approval. The sculpture is mainly 3D printed out of Massivit Dinagel, ABS plastic, and 10lbs HUD foam. Being that the shapes were quite complex I would typically run most of the files with the help from Adrain Sipe. Since I was so involved in the project, I had the privilege of working with the lead artist Jacson Polys. He and I worked together to make adjustments to ensure the substructure was properly accommodated as well as making calls to add and or remove certain elements. This was one of the most challenging pieces I have ever worked on and learned an incredible number of things ranging from dealing with heavy meshes within CAD to mix media compatibility.
